Generation Z, the cohort that grew up in the digital era, frequently finds itself under scrutiny, particularly regarding its readiness to navigate the professional world. Addressing this perception, ID COMM hosted the Sharing Session ID COMM (SSIDCOMM) talk show titled “Gen Z: Prove the Critics Wrong!” at Universitas Prof. Dr. Moestopo (Beragama), drawing 150 participants in a hybrid format on September 25.

The event brought together three distinguished experts from various fields: Riska Fiati (Senior Account Manager at ID COMM), Maya Sita (GM of Human Capital at Human Initiative), and M. Iqbal Alif Oktrianda (Talent Manager and International Talent Booker at HWG Group). Their discussion centered on strategies Gen Z can employ to challenge negative stereotypes through the development of a strong personal brand.

Gen Z is often perceived as a generation deeply connected to technology but lacking situational awareness. Stereotypes about their work ethic, such as a supposed lack of commitment, over-reliance on technology, and an excessive focus on digital issues, continue to persist. This discussion aimed to shift the narrative and highlight the immense potential Gen Z holds in thriving within the professional landscape.

Maya Sita, leveraging her experience in empowering Gen Z in the workplace, emphasized, “They are highly attuned to trends and incredibly adaptable to technology. The key challenge is guiding them toward developing stronger situational awareness. Their potential is vast, but it needs the right direction and mentorship.”

Echoing Maya’s perspective, Riska Fiati, who frequently engages with Gen Z in the communication sector, pointed out that these stereotypes do not always reflect reality. “We often hear claims that Gen Z is too dependent on technology or lacks commitment. However, in many instances, they demonstrate remarkable creativity and offer fresh, innovative solutions to the projects they handle,” she noted.

One of the most effective ways to combat negative perceptions of Gen Z is by building a strong personal brand. In today’s interconnected world, personal branding is a powerful tool for shaping a positive self-image, both online and offline. It plays a crucial role in differentiating oneself, securing job opportunities, and paving the way for career success. Social media platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, and TikTok serve as strategic arenas for Gen Z to showcase their skills and personalities to a broad audience.

Riska underscored this point, saying, “Personal branding is not just about maintaining a social media presence; it’s also about how you carry yourself in professional settings. It’s a gateway to broader career opportunities for Gen Z.” However, she added that a deeper understanding of Gen Z’s potential is necessary beyond what they portray on digital platforms. “We need to be more discerning in uncovering their talents. Once identified, their competencies can truly shine,” she remarked.

M. Iqbal Alif Oktrianda, representing Gen Z’s perspective, shared his personal experience in crafting a personal brand. “Consistency is key. I strive to present my authentic self, both on social media and in professional environments. This allows others to recognize my unique strengths and expertise. This strategy has been instrumental in shaping my career,” he revealed.

The discussion then shifted to the significance of cross-generational collaboration in achieving workplace success. Maya highlighted the need to foster an inclusive work environment for Gen Z. “Intergenerational miscommunication often fuels negative perceptions about Gen Z. However, if we can establish effective communication, the potential for collaboration across generations is immense,” she explained.

Iqbal reinforced this idea by stressing the importance of mutual understanding. “Each generation brings its own strengths to the table. If we can appreciate and learn from one another, collaboration will become smoother and more productive. Gen Z can learn from older generations, just as the previous generations can gain insights from us,” he stated.

The talk show “Gen Z: Prove the Critics Wrong!” successfully provided fresh perspectives on how Gen Z can leverage technology and cultivate a positive personal brand to navigate professional challenges. With the right guidance and an inclusive approach, Gen Z can reshape the stereotypes surrounding them and emerge as valuable assets across various industries.

This event stands as a testament to the fact that with deeper understanding and stronger intergenerational collaboration, the professional landscape can become more dynamic and productive. Armed with their unique capabilities and resilience, Gen Z is ready to make their mark and contribute significantly to building a brighter future.
